This revision book is an aid to those preparing for the FRCS General Surgery Section 1. The topics and chapters are taken directly from the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum.
The philosophy of this book is to focus on the level of knowledge and the approach that would be expected of the better candidates as they approach the end of their training and make the transition into consultants. In addition to the acquisition of knowledge through the process of tackling questions, the book will hopefully identify to the reader areas gaps in their knowledge base for which further study is required. Various techniques including the use of diagrams and tables are utilised to explain key facts.
As per the curriculum, the book is organised into chapters in accordance with the syllabus, allowing less familiar topics such as relevant aspects in urology and gynaecology to be covered. Topics such as Gastrointestinal, HPB, Vascular, Breast and Endocrine Surgery are understandably covered in greater depth given their common occurrence in the examination. Questions are presented in a single best answer and extended matching item format, mirroring those that the candidate will encounter during the examination.
This book is useful for candidates in both the early and late stages of their revision for the examination. Early familiarity with the range and depth of topics may help guide further self-directed learning. Those in the latter stages of revision can use the questions to build confidence and reinforce their knowledge.
Each chapter is written by an authoritative author alongside the book editor to ensure it is relevant and informative for the reader.
